I am absolutely amazed at the number of customers who make cards for charity. Quite a number make cards for their local church and sell them at church coffee mornings so the vicar gets the profits from both the sale of the coffee and cakes (also baked and donated by parishoners) and the sale of the cards.
Some churches also have projects overseas, notably in the third world, and the money raised from card sales at the coffee mornings goes to help these projects. One customer tells me that whatever cards she takes to the church coffee morning she always sells.
A charity favoured by many customers here in the north east of England in St. Oswald’s children’s hospice because it is just a few miles down the road. Talking to customers in other parts of the country, many of them do prefer to support local charities be it their local hospice or raising funds for equipment for their local hospital. Keeping it local seems to help sell the cards better.
In our straw poll of customers who sell cards for charity, 2 of the cancer charities were high on the list – Marie Curie and the MacMillan Nurses.
We often get asked for donations of materials from people making cards for charity, usually from people who aren’t even customers! Craftsite already supports a few projects in the UK directly with donations of stock helping children and vulnerable adults.
