Foam Pads v Silicon Glue

March 9th, 2010

When it comes to decoupage in card making people usually fall into 2 schools – those who swear by silicon glue and those who only ever use foam pads.

Silicon Glue

Owen is a purist when it comes to decoupage – and a master at it – and would never use anything else but silicon glue.

Silicon glue is much more flexible than foam pads. You can adjust the height beteen layers to give a more natural effect. You can also adjust the height within a layer, for example making the middle of the piece of decoupage slightly higher than the sides. Owen curves his layers, where applicable, and this effect would be lost if foam pads were used. The doiwnside is that silicon glue is a bit messy – best to use a coctail stick to apply it – and you do have to leave it to dry. Own leaves his overnight. At least he’s not still picking up those little squares of paper off the foam pads the next day!

Foam Pads

Linda uses foam pads – although she has been known to use a tiny bit of silcon on those awkward tiny bits. She’s also been known to cut the tiny foam pads in half or even thirds to get that last piece on. Foam pads are quick and easy, you don’t need to wait fot them to dry, and as they know come in a variety of depths you can vary the height between layers although silicon glue will always be more versatile when you want to vary the height and you can use as much or as little as you want.

And yes, she is still finding little squares of paper days afterwards even though she was sure she’d picked them all up.
