The difference between Clear and Unmounted Stamps
April 14th, 2010Q. What’s the difference between clear stamps and unmounted rubber stamps? Both seem to need an acrylic block to mount them on so are they just different names for the same thing?
A. Good question. Rubber stamping has really grown in popularity recently as people rediscover what a great technique it is for both card making and scrapbooking.
Clear stamps are, strictly speaking, not rubber stamps as they are made from acrylic. The come as individual stamps, or in sets of individual stamps, ready to be mounted on an acrylic block. They are self clinging so you just take it out of the packet and attach it to the block without any need for mounting tape or glue. Clean then with clear water and dry with kitchen towel as soon as you have used them and they will last you a long while. I usually remove my stamp from the acrylic block after cleaning and put it back in its packet ready to use the next time – leaving my acrylic block free for another clear stamp.
Unmounted rubber stamps, on the other hand, usually come on an sheet and you first need to separate the stamps out by cutting around them with a sharp pair of scissors. To mount them onto the acrylic block you need a rubber stamp adhesive or tape such as U-Mount. When cleaning try not to get too much water on the adhesive as this can lessen its stickiness.
New Embossed Cardstock
April 14th, 2010We have more card making goodies for you.
New in is this embossed cardstock from Bazzill Basics. For adding texture and interest to a card use as a backing paper. It’s 12 by 12 inches so you would get 4 pieces out to use on 144 x 144mm square cards or 6 pieces if you were using them to mount onto an A6 card. Try adding soft colour with chalks to fully bring out the embossed effect.

Making a Side Step Card
April 12th, 2010These instructions make a side step card using a sheet of A4 card.
To make the side step card you will need:
Sheet of A4 cardstock
Craft knife and cutting mat
Pencil and ruler
Eaziscore or scoring tool
Take the sheet of A4 card. You will need a reasonable heavyweight card of 240 gsm to 300 gsm. The card used in the illustration is Indigo marble card.
Cutting the Card
Cut the card to 280mm long.
Using the ruler and pencil measure the bottom of the card 115mm from the left hand side of the card and 25mm from the bottom of the card and mark with a pencil. Then measure the top of the card 115mm from the left hand side of the card and 70mm from the top of the card and mark.
Using the craft knife, ruler, and cutting mat cut a line between the 2 marks, i.e. starting 70mm from the top of the card until you get to 25mm from the bottom of the card.
Scoring the Card
Score the card on both sides of the cut line in the middle, i.e. at 140mm from both the top and bottom of the card.
Working just on the right hand side of the cut line, score the card at 70mm from the top. You should now have 2 score lines on the right hand side od the card.
Again, just on the right hand side of the card, score the card at 25mm from the bottom of the card. Score again on the right hand side of the card at 50mm from the bottom edge of the card.
Make the final score line on the right hand side of the card at 95mm from the bottom edge of the card.
Fold along the score lines on the right hand side of the card in a concertina (first one out, second one in, and so on). Fold the left hand side of the card along the only score line on that side of the card.
Flatten your card out again and add your embellishments.
Once you get used to making side step cards you can then try varying the height of your steps depending on the size of the embellishments you are using.
